We are saddened to announce the passing of Herta F. (nee Arnold) Freeby on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Ridgewood Health Campus, Lawrenceburg, IN. Herta was born on March 22, 1926 in Wallstadt, Germany to Richard and Sophie (nee Bachert) Arnold.
Herta came to this country in 1951 as a post-World War II German War Bride, after meeting and later marrying an American Army soldier. Donald Freeby was stationed in Germany for post-war reconstruction and Herta was working as a secretarial assistant to the American Army. She married Donald in 1951, became an American citizen in 1955, and also in 1955 had a daughter, Donna. Her husband, Donald, sadly passed away in 1994 at age 66.
She always wanted to be a nurse, and in 1965 received her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Augusta, Georgia, where she was living at the time. The language barrier was challenging, but she was tenacious and overcame that obstacle. Herta loved her family, and especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great pride in being a nurse, enjoyed time spent with family, and had a love of crocheting and reading.
Herta was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Sophie (Bachert) Arnold and her husband: Donald Eugene Freeby; Siblings: Fritz Arnold, Hilda Steigerwald Sabo, and Elsa Klier.
She is survived by her daughter: Donna F. (William "Bill) Sabo; grandchildren: Matthew (Catherine) Sabo and Donald (Melissa) Sabo; and cherished great-grandchildren: Cora Gene Sabo, June Hazel Sabo and Benjamin Wiley Sabo.
Burial will take place at Sunset Memory Garden in South Carolina.
