Joseph August Schulte

Joseph August Schulte, of Okeana, passed away at his home on December 27, 2020 at the age of 93. He was born May 14, 1927 in Cincinnati to Joseph W. and Mary (nee Berlier) Schulte. Joe grew up in the White Oak area. In 1945, he graduated from Roger Bacon High School and then served in the US Navy from 6/11/45 to 7/10/46. He went to Ohio State University and received his bachelor's degree in agriculture. There were stories of him hitch hiking, as well as riding in his lifelong friend’s (Ralph Berlier) sports car, traveling to and from college. He married Mary Lee Hirschberg, whom he dated in high school, on June 30, 1951 and they were blessed with 8 children: Joe, Steve, Mike, Mary, John, Larry, Lee and Katie. Joe worked for his father-in-law at American Sales & Salvage Company and as a foreman for Plastic Molding Corporation for many years. His last job was working as a mechanic for Queen City Metro. In his free time, he was an avid gardener and farmer who also enjoyed cutting wood for their home.

He will be missed by his wife of 69 years: Mary Lee Schulte; dear children: Joe (Ann) Schulte, Steve (Donna) Schulte, Mike (Vicki Baldwin) Schulte, Mary (Pete) Rodas, John (Gloria) Schulte, Larry (Julie) Schulte, Lee (Betsy) Schulte and Katie (Keith) Payne; cherished grandchildren: Jennifer, Aaron (Victoria), Ben (Audrey) Schulte, Ellen (Joel) Jordan, Olivia, Josh (Casey), Nathan (Karen), Daniel (Hanife), Sarah, Samuel (Megan), Anna (Mac Blanchard), Rachel, Emmalee, Elizabeth, Jacob, Zachary, Nathaniel, Alex (Emma), Sarah E. Schulte, Thomas and Nick Payne; great grandchildren: Harper, Adeline, Theodore, Reese, James, Ian Schulte; Eli and Oliver Jordan.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph W. and Mary Schulte; siblings: Rose Marie Victor, Angela Klensch, Sister Mary Rachel OSF, Mary Delores, Lucille and Urban Schulte.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 from 8:30 am until 10:30 am at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, OH 45030. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 10010 Carolina Trace, Harrison, OH 45030, with Father Bill Dorrmann officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

The family asks that memorials be made to Haven House Emergency Shelter, Hamilton, Ohio or to Father Al Fritsch, SJ.   This can be done at the visitation or the funeral home with a funeral home representative. If you are unable to attend you may mail your donation (made payable to the charity) to the funeral home. They will notify the family of your donation and forward the donations to the charity.
