James Edward Winter

April 6, 1928 ~ January 16, 2021 (age 92) 92 Years Old

James Winter Obituary

James E. "Jimmy" Winter, was reunited with his saint of a wife Gertrude Jean Rickard Winter on January 16, 2021 at the age of 92. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edward V and Magdalen (nee Martz) Winter. Jim was a graduate of St. Mary's School and St. Xavier High School. As the 1945 Sports Editor of St. X "Prep" he penned the future nickname "Bombers". Jim was selected to the 1944 Esquire All American Baseball Team as a sophomore. He served his country in the Korean War Army division as the second baseman for the Camp Polk baseball team. After 4 years 5 months of service to his country, he attended Xavier University. Jim was the third generation president at Winter Insurance Agency. He married Gertrude Jean Rickard on December 27, 1952. They were blessed with 6 children.  Jim was active in the community serving as president of the Musketeer Club, which was the year of the demise of football, and past president of Rotary Club of Cincinnati. He was an active member at Clovernook Country Club and was always the weekly nemesis to Dick Wurzelbacher. Jim was also a member of St. Vivian Catholic Church for 63 years. 

His many jokes and quick wit were passed down to his children: Edward "Fast Eddie" Winter, Laurie (Terry) Mikolajewski; Andrew "Dozi" (Lucy) Winter, Michael "Chief" (Lisa) Winter, twins: Robert "Chester" (Jolene) Winter, Neil "Earl" Winter. His grandchildren who referred to him as Pawpaw & Peepaw: Nate (Emily), William, Kenna, & Rickard Winter, Matt (Marge) and Tyler (Lauren) Mikolajewski, Bethany (Kate), Sarah, Seth, Luke Winter, Kim (Cam) Panther, Meghan (Jason) Crull, Emily, Lydia, Gertrude "Gigi", Nicholas, Chase and Griffin Winter; and great grandchildren: Elise, Charlie, & Claire Mikolajewski, Elliott & Emma Jo Winter, and Rowen Panther. He was also "Uncle Peepers" to Jim, Charlie and Tommy Cutter and brother-in-law to Tommy Allen. 

Besides his loving and devoted wife Gertrude Rickard Winter, he was preceded in death by his parents: Edward V. &  Magdalen (nee Martz) Winter; sister: Joan Ellen Allen; In-laws: Marian (James) Cutter, James B. and Robert J Rickard, and Billie Jean Baker Townsend.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Vivian's Catholic Church, 7600 Winton Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45224, Saturday. January 23. 2021 at 10 am. Services will be live streamed please click on the Live link below with the service information.  Face masks and social distancing will be observed. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. 

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials to Rotary Club of Cincinnati. You may bring your donation to the funeral and give to a funeral home representative or you may mail your donation to Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, OH 45030.  The family will be notified of your donation and donations mailed to the charity.

The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Nursing home, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Hospice of Cincinnati for the great care and compassion given to Jim.
