James Russell Kater, of Harrison, passed away on December 29, 2021 at the age of 86. He was born in Harrison, Ohio on June 22, 1935 to Ray and Dorothy (née Baker) Kater. He graduated William Henry Harrison High School, Class of 1953. Jim was a talented football player and if his knees would have been better would have gone onto college to play for Ohio State. Jim was inducted into the Buddy LaRossa’s Hall of Fame. He dated Beverly Padgett in high school and they married in 1953. After graduation he started working at the IGA that was owned by his future in-laws the Padgett’s. Shortly after he started working for Pepsi as a driver delivering products all over and retired as a driver supervisor. Jim was a quiet man, however, when it came to football, he would be the first to tell his son’s team what they did wrong or right in football. He also enjoyed playing golf and earlier in his life he spent some time playing cards at Jake’s Meca Cafe.
Jim will be missed by his beloved wife, of 66 years, Beverly Kater; devoted sons: Rusty (Brenda) Kater and Mark (Ann Uhlman) Kater; cherished grandchildren: Ryan (Melissa) Kater, Molly (Scott) Bunch and Joshua Kater; dear great grandchildren: Nolan & Olivia Kater, Roxanne & Leo Bunch. He is Also survived by his sister-in-law: Sharon (Mike) Tragesser and Sarah Kater.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents: Raymond and Dorothy (née Baker) Kater; and brothers: Raymond Jr. and Charles (Audrey) Kater; sisters-in-law: Martha Surber and Wanda Cromer.
Visitation will be held at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine Street, Harrison, OH on Monday, January 3, 2022, from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 12 pm. Burial to follow at Glen Haven Cemetery.
Memorials are requested to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Jim. A funeral home representative will help with memorials during the visitation and funeral. If you are unable to attend, then mail your donation to the funeral home. They will notify the family and forward the donation onto the charity.
