Hazel Smerchansky Obituary

Hazel D. Smerchansky, of Harrison, passed away on April 29, 2022, at the age of 92.  She was born in North Kingsville, Ohio on July 18, 1929, to Gilbert and Viva (nee Town) Myers.  She graduated high school and married Herbert Keith Locy, and they were blessed with 4 children: David, Donald, Charles and Linda.  Hazel started working at age 15 for Myers Meats in North Kingsville and later worked as a case worker for Ashtabula County Job and Family Services where she retired in October of 1989 after 20 years of service.  Hazel married Michael Smerchansky and became a bonus mom to Bruce, Joyce and Loralee.  She and Mike enjoyed their retirement years in Chiefland, Fl before moving to St. Augustine, FL. After 25 years, she moved to southern Ohio following Mike's death and to be near family.  She was active in many volunteer activities to support her community and groups. She served as president of the school PTA, TOPS in Chiefland, FL, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #743 and more. Hazel also delivered meals on wheels, coordinated prayer chain & coffee hour at St. Albans Episcopal Church, served as Queen Mother in the Red Hat group the "Happy Red Hatters" to name a few. She was active in supporting her children's various school and summer activities.  

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband: Michael Smerchansky; son and daughter-in-law: Donald (Renee) Locy; parents: Gilbert and Viva (nee Town) Myers; granddaughters: Melissa Locy & Jackie Kirkner; siblings: Dr. Gilbert (Georgianna) Myers II, Rosemary (Bill) Hoedt, infant brother: Charles Myers and son-in-law: Bob Stegeman. 

She is survived by her children: David (Lisa) Locy, Charles (Lisa) Locy,  Linda (Joel) Beck and daughters-in-law Barbara Cole Locy & Janie Koch Locy; step-children: Bruce (Judy) Smerchansky, Joyce (Neal) L'Amaureaux & Loralee (Bill) Keaton; grandchildren: Heidi (Scott)Kidd, Jeremy (Rachel) Locy, Jennifer (Joshua) Johnson, Lauren (John) Feie, Kristina Kaihlanen, Joshua (Rhonda) Kaihlanen, Anthony (Ashley) Stegeman, Anna Stegeman (Jeffery Logsdon), & Sarah Stegeman; great grandchildren: Jessica, Elizabeth, & Emily Kidd, Joann, Jordan, & Jacob Kirkner, Grace, Everett & Margot Feie, David, Alexis, & Reagan Kaihlanen, Alexis & Christian Delagarza, Leo, Knox, Xander, & Quinn Stegeman, Robbie Logsdon. Great great grandchildren Lionel, Savannah & Luca. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

Memorial Service with burial will take place on May 29, 2022,at 11:00 am, at East Lake Cemetery in North Kingsville, Ohio.
