George "Bill" Betscher Obituary

George (Bill) Alfred Betscher, 85, of Elizabethtown, Ohio, passed away on 11/22/2020 at his lifetime home.  He was born June 14, 1935. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Mary Betscher (nee Brett), son David Alfred (Angelia), and grandchildren Danielle, Jordan, Evan, and Joelle Betscher. Bill was predeceased by sisters, Mary Lou Ollier and Betty Jo Retzner.

Consultant to countless businesses, Bill was a true entrepreneur, helpful, innovative and full of information. Many say he forgot more than most people knew. He started his long and illustrious career with an education in cabinet making/woodwork followed by an accomplished career as an electrician and founder of Betscher Electric. Bill saw many career opportunities and found himself in excavating with Betscher Equipment, coal processing/transportation and owner of Docks Creek with Etown Supply, WCA Coal Augering as partner with his son, David, real estate investor, volunteer firefighter and assistant fire chief.

His proudest accomplishment was raising his son, David, his brother-in-law, Jim Brett, and being the best Papo to his 4 grandchildren. He encouraged homeschooling, independent thinkers, alternative medicine and was always reading and making recommendations on those and many more subjects.

After “retiring” at age 50, he spent 35 years investing his considerable wisdom and thought into anyone who had the foresight to ask his opinion (as well as some who did not but got very lucky that he advised anyway!)

Traveling with his wife, Bill loved his motorhomes and seeing the country.

He was the original “glamper” starting in a converted bread box truck to his beloved Monaco’s in later years. His hobbies also included boating and skiing. Bill loved his Chris Craft, the Slo Poke, loaning out his fishing boat “Kindercare” and being one of the first at Dale Hollow with a Ski Sanger. As a slalom skier, he had a one of a kind ski and scoffed at pulling a tube, that is until the grandkids convinced him to pull them tubing! Nothing made him happier than spending hours teaching someone to water ski or encouraging them to try to barefoot (and if they couldn’t or wouldn’t, coaxing Dave to “show em how it’s done”).

Bill was like a Dad to many, always giving his wisdom and life experience. Beyond proud of his son, Bill knew that he’d created a chip off the block teaching him everything you could imagine but especially how to be generous. He loved his daughter-in-law as his own and served as a constant source of positive encouragement from the very beginning.

Amazingly, as invested as he was in so many people, there was an endless well of love, pride and joy available for his four precious grandchildren. You could only talk to Bill for a few minutes before hearing how smart and accomplished his grandchildren were.

Always a staunch supporter of their dreams, he encouraged them to pursue happiness, work hard, and believe that anything was possible. He believed and insisted that they were the brightest around and was quick to point out the unique accomplishments and skills that each possessed.
