Herbert Eugene "Gene" Ziegler

Herbert Eugene "Gene" Ziegler, age 91, of West Harrison, passed away at his home on September 13, 2019. He was born on July 12, 1928, in Bright, Indiana to Henry and Cordella (nee Grubbs) Ziegler. He married Carole Benson on July 1, 1950, and they were blessed with two children: Gene and Roxie. Gene was employed at the Gulf Oil Refinery for 38 years, retiring on July 4, 1986, when the refinery shut down. In his younger years he played baseball and softball and was known for his fielding ability and his speed on the base paths. In his later years he enjoyed watching his son, grandchildren and great grandchildren play sports, and spent many hours on his 4 wheeler checking on his cattle.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years Carole (nee Benson) Ziegler; beloved children: Rodney "Gene" (Molly) Ziegler and Roxanne (Donnie) Lunsford; cherished grandchildren: Nathan (Amy) Ziegler, Sarah (Brandon) Black, Meg (Randy) Labertus, Lindsay (Kyle) Kohlman,Jessica (Josh) Lefever, Andy (Jessica) Lunsford, and Ashley (Mike) Tramel; and 16 great grandchildren: Ryan, Maya, and Wyatt Ziegler, Maycee and Karlee Black, Ryder, Maggie, and Rowan Lambertus, Landon, Caden, and Waylon Kohlman, Riley, Reese, Larkyn, AJ Lunsford and Michael "Buddy" Tramel; his siblings: Loren (Patricia) and Donald (Betty) Ziegler and Rosella Carrol. Gene is also survived by a nephew whom he thought of as a son: Dr. Andrew J. (Theresa) Mandery; and great nephews: A.J. and Matt Mandery, whom he thought of as his grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Cordella Ziegler; and siblings: Clifford Ziegler, Nellie Calloway, Bessie Calloway, Henrietta Eggleston, Clara Ogdon & Susie Reatherford.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 PM at Brater Winter Funeral Home, 201 S. Vine St., Harrison, OH 45030. Burial to follow at Glen Haven Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Harrison Junior Baseball at the visitation or funeral service. If you are unable to attend mail your donation to the funeral home for either charity and the funeral home will notify the family and forward donations to the charity.
