Obituary

Samuel Curtis Vaught Sr., of Harrison, passed away on January 29, 2023 at the age of 97. Sam was born in Cincinnati, to Milford and Nancy (Solomon) Vaught on May 3, 1925.  His father died when he was young and his mother later married Edward Faulkner, from Sunman and the family moved to the farm.  Sam graduated from Sunman High School in 1943 and then went to serve in the US NAVY.  During WWII. Sam flew in a dive bomber off a Navy aircraft carrier in the Pacific fleet.  When he came back from the Navy he married Mabel Katherine Grubbs on December 31, 1946.  They were blessed with 3 boys: Samuel Jr., Michael, and Matthew. Sam followed in his father's footsteps and went to work for the Railroad.  He then went to school at Ohio Mechanical Institute (now called Central Tech.)  Sam landed a job at Gulf Oil and worked for them for 13 yrs.  He then went to work for the US Post Office as a mail carrier until his semi retirement.  Sam liked to work so even when he retired he always found a job to do.  In retirement he went to work for the Park District.  After officially retiring he could be found at the Harrison Senior Center playing cards or checkers.  Sam had a sharp mind when it came to finance and also strategic moves, which helped him with his card and checker games.  His family knows that he didn't loose often and if he did you were probably cheating.... Sam was also very creative.  He played the guitar and wrote poetry.  He never wrote any of the poetry down because he said "I don't need to write it down it's in my head."  Sam was a wonderful dad.  He taught his son's how to hunt and fish, and made sure that his children never had a need for anything in life. Sam grew up in the depression so he knew what having nothing was like and that is why he always worked and made a better life for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife: Mabel Katherine (nee Grubbs) Vaught; parents: Milford Vaught and Nancy & Edward Faulkner; and siblings.

Survivors include his children: Samuel (Mary) Vaught Jr., Michael (Diane) Vaught & Matthew (Regina) Vaught; Grandchildren: Ryan, Justin, Jennifer, Adrienne, Jessica, Kelly & Tony; 14 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandchildren (2 more on the way).
