Sam was born in Cincinnati, to Milford and Nancy (Solomon) Vaught on May 3, 1925.  His father died when he was young and his mother later married Edward Faulkner, from Sunman and the family moved to the farm.  Sam graduated from Sunman High School in 1943 and then went to serve in the US NAVY.  During WWII.
