Val McKenzie Obituary

Val McKenzie, resident of Whitewater Township, lost his battle to ALS on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the age of 69.

He was born on August 11, 1948 in Mayfield, Kentucky to Kenneth and Pauline Faye (nee Hayes) McKenzie. He was the protective brother of Jan. Val joined the US Army and served his country with Honor from July 24, 1969 to Jan. 27, 1972 during Vietnam. He married Debbie Lail on October 19, 1974 and they were blessed with one son Brant. Val was an antique car collector. If he didn't know how to fix any of the cars he would do research and figure it out. Val also loved Genealogy. He traced their family tree back to the 1300's and would many times do research for family and friends and give them their family tree as gifts. Val was part of the Eastern Kentucky Genealogical Society, Lawrence County Genealogical & Historical Society, Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society, Big Sandy Valley Historical Society, and Kentucky Genealogical society. He also was a promoter of the Eastern Kentucky Genealogical Conference. Locally he was a member of the Crosby Historical Society and committee member of the Miamitown War Memorial. Besides connecting people with History, he was also a Kentucky Colonel. Val was an active member of the Miami Whitewater United Methodist Church. He also had a witty sense of humor that he had up until the very end. Val's struggle with ALS was hard, but he had wonderful family and friends that supported him and his family until the end. "It is what it is."

Val will be missed dearly by his loving wife of 42 years Debbie McKenzie; cherished son: Brant McKenzie; dear sister: Jan (Ted) Gordon; Father & Mother in law: Ervan & Rosemary Lail; Sisters-in-law: Jean (the late Mel) Knollman, Judy (Frank) Linkmeyer; special Aunt Erma Lee Ward; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Val was preceded in death by his parents: Kenneth and Pauline McKenzie.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September, 17, 2017 from 1:30 PM until the time of the service at 5 PM at Miami Whitewater United Methodist Church, 9700 Dry Fork Road, Harrison, OH 45030. Military Honors will immediately follow the services at the church.
